Education and Training Coordinator

This is a part time position with a maximum of 25 hours per week.

Position Summary: The mission of the National Coalition for the Homeless is to dispel myths and educate the public about homelessness in the United States. To this end, we engage with people who have experienced homelessness to teach groups about the reality of being without a home in the US. These speakers are provided training in public speaking, and are compensated for their time and expertise as advocates. Our speakers talk to religious organizations, corporate retreats, school children, and college students. Many speakers will also be connected to further advocacy opportunities, such as testifying on Capitol Hill, providing technical assistance, or responding to news media requests.

Current Pandemic Protocols/Future of the Program: Before the pandemic, the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau scheduled 250 presentation or more a year, but that has significantly slowed down over the last year. All current presentations are done via Zoom until at least July 2021.  All staff activities are being conducted remotely and so therefore can be performed from anywhere.  As schools begin to reopen, NCH hopes to begin to increase the public education component of our operation and we may redesign the position with either more hours or taking on greater responsibility.

Position Activities:

  • Train and oversee all speakers/advocates involved in NCH’s public education programs, assign advocates to speaking and other engagements
  • Communicate with groups sponsoring events, including scheduling, invoicing, and trouble-shooting
  • Process check requests to ensure speaker advocates are compensated for their time
  • Advertise the Speakers’ Bureau and solicit additional speaking engagements
  • Attend staff meetings and assist staff where needed to ensure those with previous homeless experience are involved in training and educational opportunities
  • Advance the policy and advocacy positions of the Coalition
  • Assist speaker advocates with creating dynamic social media content for NCH’s channels
  • Network and partner with other Coalitions and their speaker’s bureaus.

Required Skills:

  • Access to reliable internet
  • 3 years previous experience working with unhoused folks
  • Strong writing and speaking skills
  • Passion for and commitment to ending homelessness in the US
  • Good working knowledge of basic word processing and data management.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Previous experience of homelessness is an asset for all NCH positions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Previous experience in educating others and/or in training individuals
  • Professionalism and resourcefulness.

Compensation:  This position pays $22 per hour as a part time position, up to 25 hours a week. There are no additional benefits offered at this time.

To apply: Please no phone calls. Send a resume or background information containing your complete work history for the last 8 years, a cover letter referencing this position, and a writing sample (no more than 1 page—could be a poem, a journal entry, anything) by e-mail to bdavis@nationalhomeless.org. Deadline for application is Monday, March 22, 2021.
