Stop Hate-Motivated Violence Against Homeless People

The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty are leading a national campaign to prevent and end hate-motivated violence against people experiencing homelessness. NCH and NLCHP invite organizations at the national, state, and local level to stand with us in this effort, including: advocacy and direct service organizations that are concerned with civil rights, justice, crime prevention, homelessness, housing, and/or poverty.

NCH and NLCHP have prepared two policy statements. The first offers recommendations for preventing and ending hate crimes and violence against people without homes, written for policymakers at all levels of government. The second is an endorsement letter for homeless hate crimes statistics legislation (H.R. 2216) currently before the U.S. Congress. Both documents are linked here:

Over 150 national, state, and local organizations have already endorsed one or both documents. Among them are the NAACP, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund, United Methodist Church General Board on Church and Society, National Network for Youth, Southern Poverty Law Center, and AFL-CIO.

If your organization is able to add its voice to this anti-violence effort, please email hatecrimes@nationalhomeless.org. Be sure to include your organization name and full contact information. We will be collecting organization endorsements on a rolling basis. For more information, please contact Michael Stoops at mstoops@nationalhomeless.org or Tulin Ozdeger at tozdeger@nlchp.org.
