national coalition for the homeless executive director
Position Summary: The Executive Director of NCH is responsible for providing leadership, management of the coalition and carrying out the policies, programs and public policy initiatives established by the board of directors. This position is full-time and is based in our Washington, DC national headquarters. Some travel is required.
Duties:
- Implement and monitor the Strategic Plan and Vision of the board including new and established programs, including development and monitoring of annual work plan.
- Oversee NCH fund development efforts, and participate in development activities, including preparing grant proposals and maintaining relations with both funders and potential ones.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the office and coordination of board operations.
- Supervise staff and volunteers.
- Function as the principal spokesperson in dealing with public officials and the media.
- Prepare annual budget in conjunction with the board executive committee.
- Represent NCH to other local and national advocacy groups.
- Coordinate public policy initiatives, community organizing and public education.
- Oversee annual audit process in conjunction with board Treasurer.
- Ensure compliance with governmental requirements of non-profit corporation.
- Ensure compliance with grant and funding requirements.
Demonstrated Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent leadership skills.
- Experience supervising a staff, recruiting employees, evaluating work and maintaining a high level of staff retention.
- Experience implemented a team management approach.
- Ability and experience communicating effectively with the media in previous work.
- Experience managing a grassroots local, state or national organization involved with advocacy on housing, homeless or human rights issues.
- Demonstrated experience raising funds for a $500,000 to $750,000 non-profit organization from diverse private and public funding sources.
- Successfully demonstrated sound fiscal management.
- Experience implementing and monitoring a successful strategic planning effort.
- Ability and experience working successfully with a diverse volunteer board of directors.
- Detail-oriented, ability to delegate, good follow-through, and ability to hold people accountable.
- Experience working with diverse organizations using a variety of organizing strategies.
Qualifications:
- At least three to five years in a position of similar experience at a grassroots local, state or national advocacy organization.
- Candidate with national policy or organizing experience preferred.
- Extensive working knowledge of homelessness and housing issues.
- Proven ability working with a diverse board and staff.
- Demonstrated commitment to open communication and team work.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Salary range and benefits are comparable with other national homeless and housing advocacy organizations.
Applicant must be available for a face-to-face interview in Washington, DC at a date to be determined in July 2009. NCH will pay reasonable travel expenses for out-of-state applicants.

AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer Positions Open in Florida
We are hiring up to 12 AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteers to coordinate local Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureaus in cities throughout Florida.
In 2006, Florida ranked first in the number of hate crimes/violent acts against homeless people. Help stop this growing trend of primarily teens/young adults doing violence against the homeless population. Break the stereotypes and misconceptions people have about homelessness. Educate the general public about the root causes of homelessness and its solutions, along with what people can do to end homelessness in America.

INTERNSHIPS AT NCH
Are
you interested in volunteering/interning with the National Coalition
for the Homeless or the local/statewide homeless/housing coalition
in your community?
NCH
has a limited number of unpaid internship positions available throughout
the year.
Interns
are assigned to one of the issue areas of NCH's work: civil rights,
health, affordable housing and income (living wage/welfare reform),
media/publications, and grassroots organizing.
Length
of internship varies: from 3 weeks to 6 months.
If
you are in college, check with your school about getting academic
credit and/or stipend for your internship at NCH.
